About Us

Working Together to Prevent Suicide

The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Champlain East (Coalition) formed following two community symposiums themed “Our Community: Addressing Suicide Together” that were held on February 24, 2010 (in Cornwall) and June 3, 2010 (held in Casselman).

The Coalition’s first Strategic Plan was developed in 2011 with some revisions made in 2013 and 2015.

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Coalition members identified a need to review the strategic plan. Changes in Coalition membership and community partnerships (including but not limited to the Youth Wellness Hub, the SDGCA Vibrant Communities Strategy, the Prescott and Russell Community Safety and Well-being Plan, and the Glengarry Mental Health Initiative) provided an opportunity to reassess the role and function of the Coalition to avoid duplication and ensure alignment and collaboration with existing strategies.

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, including social and economic consequences further confirmed the need for a renewed strategic and action plan for the Coalition. In 2023, the Coalition reconvened with a newly developed strategic action plan. Priorities include education, awareness, and engagement.

Members of the Coalition are people with lived or living experience and partners from health, social, education, and community safety sectors. Together, they envision suicide-safer communities, a ground up approach to changing public attitudes about suicide.
